The in-car GPS has become one of the World’s best-loved and most useful gadgets, with millions of car journeys every day being routed using a personal navigation device. There are a number of brands that are the World leaders in terms of devices, including Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, and Navigon. Whilst a GPS should be a one-off purchase there is a caveat to that cost – and this is due to the changing nature of the nation’s roads.
With new highways, intersections, and address changes occurring on a weekly basis, your GPS will never be 100% up to date. This is why drivers need to update their maps as often as possible. Thankfully the Garmin manufacturer (who are the best-selling) have an easy approach to updating the on-device maps. This is how you do it in a number of very easy steps.
Register Your Garmin Nuvi GPS
Firstly you will need to register the product with Garmin. They have a very intuitive customer account service that’s called myGarmin. Within this website you can manage your device and all the maps you already have loaded – as well as purchasing newly updated software too.
Choose Your Garmin Map Update
There are three different types of Garmin map updates available as follows:
- nuMaps Guarantee – which is a free download
- nuMaps Onetime – lets you download a fresh install just once and costs less than $50
- nuMaps Lifetime – gives you 4 map update downloads annually and costs under $80
In order to qualify for free Garmin map updates you will need to be a new customer. Garmin only offer free maps to people who have owned their Nuvi device for less than 90 days.
How to Install New Maps
Once you’ve decided what map update is for you then you can install the software by logging into your myGarmin account and synchronizing the unit to your PC using the compatible USB cable that comes with the packaging and box when you buy.
Within the myGarmin admin area you can see all the purchased maps that you have and select the one that you want to update with. The install process then downloads an .exe file to your PC which then manages the whole process for you. It should not take any longer than 30 minutes over a standard and modern Internet connection.
