The main benefit is you get to ride the latest board every year, and it is in good condition. Yes you can save money in the long run by buying, but then you are also stuck with a board that needs tuning, and has also lost its 'pop' or stiffness. Besides, by the time you have 'saved' money, it is a couple of years, and your equipment is no longer anywhere near as good as the stuff you could be renting.
